Thermoformed packaging provider Fabri-Kal is to open a new $50m production plant in Burley, Idaho, the US.

The addition of 100,000ft2 facility will expand the company's presence in plastics thermoforming.

The new plant will manufacture packaging products using a renewable and compostable material that is made from plant-based fiber. These products will be an addition to the company's existing Greenware product line.

Greenware is line of renewable drink cups, lids, portion containers and on-the-go boxes, made entirely from plants and not petroleum, Fabri-Kal said.

Fabri-Kal president and COO Mike Roeder said: "The plant opening marks the next step in our company's leadership position in sustainable packaging and is consistent with our continued commitment to being a responsible corporate citizen.

"Our continued investment in our Greenware line sends a clear message to consumers that we value the environment, our customers, and our people."

The plant will initially employ 50 people, with plans to add an additional 100 people in the next five years.

The new plant will maintain Fabri-Kal's quality and manufacturing standards and will be certified for International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and Food Safety System Certification (FSSC 22000).

Fabri-Kal Burley facility manager Brian Hackett said: "We're proud to publicly introduce our new facility in the community of Burley.

"We extend our appreciation to the state of Idaho and local agencies in Burley for their support in developing this project."

Fabri-Kal uses PP, PET, PCR-PET, HDPE, PLA, renewable agricultural pulp, and HIPS in making foodservice and custom thermoformed packaging solutions.

The company currently employs over 900 people in five manufacturing, printing and warehousing facilities across the US.
